The story of diaper bags in many ways reflects how American brands built China from a backwater communist state into a manufacturing powerhouse full of its own power and threatening the world militarily and economically.
When my child was growing up, we used Skip Hop products. When Skip Hop was founded in the early 2000s it made its products in El Salvador. But after peaking in popularity in around 2017, the brand has been on a steady decline. Not coincidentally, that was the year Carters acquired them and no doubt stopped their innovation and started treating them as a cash cow.
Also not coincidentally, consumers started to ask themselves: why would I spend money on Skip Hop’s made in China bags when I can get another made in China bag that looks the same (and possibly was made in the same factory) for much less?
Sadly, other up-and-coming brands like JuJuBe, Caraa, Beis, and Itzy Ritzy moved their production to China, no doubt pushed by clueless venture capitalists. Other brands like Lands End and Pottery Barn Kids go completely out of their way to AVOID disclosing their country of origin.
Happily some of the BEST diaper bags you can get are made outside China, and let’s hope it stays that way.

Best Diaper Bags Not Made in China
1. Patagonia Terravia Tote Pack
Wirecutter names this as their best diaper bag overall, which is a bit odd since it’s not sold as a diaper bag at all. But they say it holds the essentials, is comfortable to carry, makes organizing and finding stuff easy, is easy to clean, and is made of quality materials.
That combination makes this a great pick for parents who want a versatile, eco-conscious alternative to traditional diaper bags. It combines Patagonia’s outdoor durability with thoughtful organization, giving you a bag that works just as well for hikes, errands, and travel as it does for carrying diapers and bottles.
This one is made in Vietnam in a Fair Trade Certified factory.
2. Dagne Dover Indi Diaper Bag Backpack
Dagne Dover bags are not cheap, but they consistently make the lists of the very best diaper bags, including lists by The Bump, People Magazine, and Oprah herself.
It’s a backpack make out of neoprene that’s perfect for this generation of new moms who wouldn’t be caught dead with a traditional diaper bag. It’s modern, sleek, and yet still has organized compartments, stroller clips, and a changing pad.
It’s made in Vietnam, and is one of the best non-China options for parents who want a diaper bag they’ll keep using long after baby years.
3. Huhu Everyday Diaper Backpack

Huhu’s Everyday Diaper Backpack was named by Time as the best diaper bag for multiple kids, and PureWow named it the best diaper bag for travel. It’s also been praised in media outlets from Parents magazine to Good Housekeeping.
Wisely, they decided to make their products in Vietnam—that not only saves them a ton of money in tariffs, but it also protects their brand from being copied and sold for pennies on the dollar.
They use top tier materials, including magnetic closures, high quality PFAS-free fabric, and lightweight aluminum hardware. It’s got a whopping 10 storage pockets and 2 pocking pouches, and has an ergonomic back panel and plush backpack straps—things I know moms will appreciate.
4. Nike Convertible Diaper Bag
I had to do a double-take when I saw that this is made in Indonesia. And yet sure enough, even though Nike’s site was tight-lipped about the country of origin, Revolve reported that it’s made in Indonesia.
Nike, of course, along with brands like Apple led the charge in shutting own American manufacturing towns and moving everything to China, so it’s refreshing to see them diversifying.
5. Petunia Pickle Bottom Meta Backpack
I was hesitant to recommend this one, even though it was named as a top pick by Forbes, Parents, Mommyhood 101, and Moms Without Answers. Why? Because they are annoyingly coy about their country of origin—there’s no mention of it at all on their Web site or on Amazon. I guess there are rumors going around that they’re made in the USA, and I guess they want people to continue believing that.

It’s something I’ve seen a lot—companies hide the fact that they’re made in Southeast Asia or Asia, oblivious to the reality that if they don’t say anything, the instant assumption is China.
Thanks to a random Amazon reviewer, I caught a glimpse of the label that confirms that it is, indeed, made in Vietnam. Nothing to be ashamed of, Petunia.
Reviewers rave about how stylish and professional the bag is, perfect for a mom with a career, complete with a strap to attach to rolling luggage, ease of cleaning, and tons of pockets and space discreetly built in.
6. Tough Traveler Large Diaper Bag
My guess is that most new moms who want a diaper bag that “doesn’t look me look like a mom” like the two above will quickly abandon those dreams within the first few weeks of motherhood when they realize they need to figure out where in their sleek backpack they put the diapers, the baby powder, the wipes, the toys, the pacifier, the bottle, the swaddling cloth, the utensils, the formula, and the fifty million other things they need to keep track of.
That’s when a more traditional diaper bag like Tough Traveler’s comes in. Yes, it makes you look like “a mom”, but at some point a mother will realize: who the heck cares what I look like?
“Tough Traveler” isn’t just a name—it’s a brand that’s been made in the USA for years. It may not look as fancy as a Dagne Dover, but moms with this bag will be quicker on the draw to find anything in its generous pockets and thoughtful features like a built-in changing pad.
7. Tom Bihn Parental Unit
The Tom Bihn Parental Unit is about as far from a “trendy backpack” as you can get. It’s a messenger-style diaper bag that feels classic and understated, with the kind of thoughtful design Tom Bihn is known for.
Made in Seattle, it’s built tough and organized in a way that actually makes sense—symmetrical side pockets, a divided main section, and smart little touches that keep wipes, diapers, and snacks easy to grab without digging.
It’s not flashy, but that’s the point: this is a diaper bag you’ll be happy carrying every day, and one that still works as a sharp messenger bag long after you’re done hauling baby gear.
Conclusion
If there’s one thing this list proves, it’s that parents don’t have to settle for diaper bags made in China. Whether you want the eco-minded versatility of Patagonia, the sleek modern design of Dagne Dover, the smart ergonomics of Huhu, or the traditional practicality of brands like Tough Traveler and Tom Bihn, there are plenty of options made in Vietnam, Indonesia, or even the USA.
Each of these bags brings something different to the table: style, sustainability, durability, or just plain common sense.
At the end of the day, the best diaper bag is the one that makes your life easier and helps you keep up with the chaos of parenthood WITHOUT compromising on your values.
