Best erasers not made in China

Post by steve »

I wrote a blog post about best school and office supplies not made in China, but I figured I'd write a post here focusing in on erasers. There were too many to put into that article, but I figured I'd share some of my findings for those (like me) who like being complete.

The three I chose still stand as the best:

Ticonderoga - Still made in Taiwan, and still the best classic pink eraser.

Pentel - Still made in Japan, and still the best overall performer.

Staedler - Still largely made in Germany. They use plastic (PVC + chalk + gelatine) which rub off more coarsely than rubber erasers and don't stick to paper. Named by Wirecutter as "kids' favorite eraser".

Here are some others:

Pilot Foam Eraser - High quality foam eraser that like a lot of Japanese erasers get rave reviews. These are definitely made in Japan.

Tombow - A Japanese brand known for precision and removing marks without damaging paper. By most accounts, these are made in Vietnam.

Faber-Castell Dust Free - Known for being dust-free and requiring very little pressure. Online sites and AI erroneously say these are made in Germany. That may have been true once, but according to the company, they're now made in Malaysia.

Sakura Crepas Foam Eraser - Be careful of some of Sakura's cheaper stuff—some of it is made in China. These premium foam erasers are definitely made in Japan and are a favorite among artists.

This seems to be one area where consumers are sick of the terrible quality out of China and where brands in Japan (who make the best erasers in the world) kept hold of their secrets—at least for their high-end erasers—so that China couldn't easily steal them.

Some others you see a lot in Europe are:
Milan, made in Spain
Maped, made in France
Factis, made in Spain
Koh-I-Noor, made in CZ
Pelikan, made in Germany

No need to buy Chinese erasors!
