Coat hangers is one of those categories that, like socks, we just grew to accept over the years like boiling frogs. When I was a kid, we all used wire hangers. Then, plastic hangers came around which were stronger and more comfortable to use. But soon after that, cheaper plastic hangers came on the scene which looked like the old plastic hangers, but which were flimsy, bendable, and once they got old and brittle snapped in two like kindling.
What happened? Globalization, of course. And as I've said often on this blog, the fault doesn't lie with China, nor with American companies that ran breathlessly to them. The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our stars but in ourselves. Every time we bought a $5 pack of hangers from a warehouse store and then bragged to our friends about how we were smart consumers, we reinforced to the greedy American executives and their China enablers that they were doing the right thing. Worse, that we've become conditioned to going back every 2 years and buying more when they break ends up costing us as consumers even more money and ends up lining the pockets of those same executives, not to mention the People's Liberation Army.
We need to go back to the philosophy our parents and grandparents had. Buy something for life.
